How to Pack a U-Haul Truck

  • Storage Tips

Loading a moving truck is more than just a manual task; it is a strategic process. When done correctly, it ensures the safety of your belongings, maximizes your available space, and provides a more stable driving experience. Whether you are moving across Little Rock or preparing for a long-distance relocation, utilizing professional packing techniques is essential for a successful transition.

Follow this comprehensive guide to load your U-Haul truck like a professional.

Choose Your U-Haul Truck Size

At least 4–5 weeks before you move, reserve a U-Haul rental truck for your moving date. Decide how much space you need based on what you’re taking with you. You want a truck that’s big enough to take everything in 1–2 trips. Getting a truck that’s too small just means you’ll end up making several trips back and forth or you’ll have to unpack that truck and exchange it for a larger truck. Either way, you end up spending more time and money moving.

The truck sizes available for rental through U-Haul are the following:

  • 10 foot (typically used by people who are moving from a studio or one-bedroom apartment; smallest box truck available)
  • 15 foot (usually used by people who are moving from a 2-bedroom apartment or condo; truck also has a low deck and EZ load ramp; includes attic space to store away fragile items)
  • 17 foot (typically used to move from larger apartments and condos; includes attic space to store away fragile items)
  • 20 foot (also ideal for larger apartments, condos, and small houses; includes attic space to store away fragile items)
  • 26 foot (typically used to move from large 3-5 bedroom homes; includes attic space to store away fragile items)

Purchase New Boxes

If all your boxes are pretty much shaped the same way, this will ease your loading process and make it more effective. Additionally, it will minimize the possibility of collapsed boxes and broken belongings within the boxes.

Rent Enough Padding

1. Prepare Your Equipment and Supplies

Before you begin loading, ensure you have the necessary tools to protect your furniture and your physical health:

  • Furniture Pads: Essential for preventing scratches and dents during transit.

  • Moving Straps and Tie-downs: These secure your “tiers” of boxes and heavy furniture to the integrated wall rails.

  • Utility Dolly: Use a dolly for heavy appliances and tiered stacks of boxes to reduce physical strain.

  • Packing Tape and Labels: Ensure every box is sealed and clearly marked with its destination room and “Fragile” status where applicable.

2. Prioritize Weight Distribution

For optimal vehicle handling, the heaviest items should be loaded first and placed toward the front of the truck (the area closest to the cab).

  • The 60/40 Rule: Aim to place approximately 60% of the total weight in the front half of the truck. This keeps the center of gravity stable and prevents the truck from swaying at highway speeds.

  • Heavy Appliances: Refrigerators, washers, and dryers should be upright and placed against the front wall.

3. Utilize the “Mom’s Attic”

Most U-Haul trucks feature a compartment that extends over the cab, known as “Mom’s Attic.” This is the ideal location for:

  • Fragile Items: Glassware, electronics, and delicate décor that should stay away from heavier items.

  • Soft Goods: Linens, pillows, and clothing that can act as extra padding.

4. Build in “Tiers”

Professional movers load in vertical sections, or “tiers,” from the floor to the ceiling.

  • The Foundation: Place your heaviest, sturdiest boxes at the bottom.

  • Stacking: Place lighter boxes on top of heavier ones. Ensure the tiers are tight to prevent shifting.

  • Filling Gaps: Use rolled-up rugs, cushions, or bags of clothing to fill “holes” in your tiers. This prevents items from moving while the truck is in motion.

5. Protect Furniture and Long Items

  • Disassemble When Possible: Remove table legs and bed frames to save significant space.

  • Vertical Placement: Long items such as mattresses, box springs, and long mirrors should be placed upright against the side walls of the truck. Use mattresses as “walls” to help cushion other items.

  • Pad Everything: Use furniture pads between every finished wood surface or upholstered piece to prevent friction damage.

6. The “Essentials” Box

The last items loaded should be the first items you need upon arrival. This includes:

  • Basic tools for reassembling furniture.

  • Cleaning supplies.

  • Basic toiletries and a change of clothes.

  • Important documents and chargers.
